The Immigration Law

In the 1923’s there was a law that only allowed a certain amount of people to immigrate to Canada. This law was known as Chinese Immigration Act. The immigration policy of Canada required all Chinese immigrants to pay a $500 entrance fee to enter our country. But this wasn’t the only obstacle the Chinese immigrants had to overcome in order to immigrate from China to Canada. Only about 15 Chinese immigrants were lucky enough to be accepted into Canada.  The legislation proved to be extremely effective in restricting Chinese immigration but that’s not the only thing restricting Chinese immigration.

China, a vast country located in southeast Asia along the coastline of the pacific Ocean, had horrible living conditions in China. One of the main reasons that spearheaded citizens of China to immigrate to Canada is the safety of their family. Chinese citizens were living a life constantly pressurized, toyed with by a group running all of the underground operations of the country called the Black Society. The Black Society is a mirror image of the mafia groups in the west but much stronger and lethal. They were so powerful that even the government tried to avoid them. The Black Society was a huge fan of human trafficking, drugs, and other illegal acts. But it doesn’t end there, in order for them to sustain their wealth without working, they had people visit  stores, students, and the elderly charging them what they like to call a security fee. People were stressing every single day, deciding whether or not to give up their life. They had to get out of there, out of their homeland, out of that corrupt country. No matter the cost.

My grandpa was a victim of the black society, the Black Society were constantly giving my grandparents visits at their home, harassing them to pay their security fees. But enough was enough, for the sake of my dad’s and uncle’s future he needed to make his move, and one day he decided to immigrate to another country, to get away from his once beloved homeland. Subsequently, after he got a phone call from his best friend, informing him that there will be a ship that is departing to Canada next month and he could help my grandpa and his family “immigrate” there. The choice was clear but illegally immigrating goes against my grandpa’s morals and values. He is a man of integrity, so in order for him to immigrate to Canada, he started to work 2 other jobs in order to save up. Little by little, my family made it, they made it to Canada. Ever since the rebirth of my grandpa’s life, he constantly reminds, pressurizes my dad that he needs to focus on his education in order for him to succeed in life. Maybe living a life full of pressure produces paranoid parents in the future.
